Experience & Trail Readiness

Blaze’s Backcountry Bootcamp is designed for first-time backpackers, but not first-time hikers.

Backpacking requires carrying weight over uneven terrain for multiple hours, often with elevation gain and variable weather. For that reason, we recommend participants have intermediate hiking experience and feel comfortable hiking 6–10 miles in a day on mountainous terrain before adding a loaded pack.

You do not need prior backpacking experience, that’s what this trip is for! However, you should:

  • Be comfortable hiking on rocky or uneven trails
  • Have experience with moderate elevation gain
  • Be capable of sustained physical effort for several hours
  • Be excited to carry and manage your own pack

If you’re not quite there yet, we’re here to help. We provide training guidance, conditioning recommendations, and gear preparation support leading up to the trip so you arrive confident and ready.

If you’re unsure whether this trip is right for you, just reach out! We’re happy to talk through your experience and help you prepare.

The Lowdown

If you’ve ever said, “I’ve always wanted to try backpacking…someday,” this trip is for you.

Blaze’s Backcountry Bootcamp is a true learn-to-backpack experience designed specifically for beginners. It’s a supportive, skills-focused weekend in Shenandoah National Park that provides the stepping stones to your very first overnight backpacking trip.

Think of this as the bridge between dreaming about backpacking and actually planning your first independent trip. A supportive environment, real-world skills., manageable mileage, and an enthusiastic guide who makes sure your first overnight experience is done right. From packing and gear selection to water treatment and camp set up (and more!), you’ll leave with the skills and confidence to pursue your own wild and wonderful adventures.

This is how you turn “someday” into your first backpacking trip – and build the foundation for a lifetime of backcountry adventures.

What You’ll Love

Shenandoah National Park is the perfect place to fall in love with backpacking. You’ll hike along rocky ridgelines with sweeping Blue Ridge vistas, pass waterfalls tucked into shaded hollows, and watch early morning light spill across layered mountains. Evenings bring golden-hour overlooks and quiet forest camps, with the chance to spot deer, black bears, or soaring hawks along the way.

But what you’ll remember most isn’t just the scenery – it’s the feeling. Cooking dinner under the trees, filtering water from a cold stream, falling asleep under the stars, and realizing you’re capable of carrying everything you need on your back. You won’t just learn the skills – you’ll experience the freedom and confidence that make people come back to the backcountry again and again.

The Trek

Day 1: 3–6 miles | Ridgeline Views & Camp Set Up

We begin at a high-elevation trailhead inside Shenandoah National Park, stepping onto a scenic ridgeline route with sweeping Blue Ridge vistas and rocky Appalachian terrain. After a hands-on pack fitting and final gear check, we hike north along panoramic overlooks and shaded forest stretches, building trail pacing and pack confidence as we go.

By mid-afternoon, we arrive at a developed campground for our first overnight. This frontcountry stay allows us to refine camp systems – tent setup, food storage, water treatment, and cooking – while maintaining some of the creature comforts of home.

For those with energy to spare, an optional sunset hike offers the chance to take in golden-hour mountain views before settling in for the night.

Day 2: 4–8 miles | Into the Backcountry

After morning coffee and an efficient camp breakdown, we shoulder our packs and continue along the ridge before descending into one of Shenandoah’s lush river valleys. The route we choose will depend on group preference and experience, offering either a gentler descent or a more adventurous, rugged option.

We trade wide-open overlooks for cool forest canopy, flowing water, and the steady rhythm of hiking deeper into the park. By afternoon, we arrive at a quiet creekside campsite for our true backcountry overnight.

This is where it all comes together – filtering water from the stream, cooking dinner under the trees, hanging a bear bag, and the quiet confidence that you’ve earned this.

Day 3: 3–6 miles | The Climb & The Finish

We wake to early light along the creek, eat a hearty breakfast, and begin our final climb back toward the ridgeline. The ascent route will be selected based on group fitness and energy – either a steady, sustained climb or a steeper, more exposed option for those looking for more of a challenge.

Reaching the summit area, we’re rewarded once more with sweeping mountain views. We finish where we began, gathering for reflections before heading back to the trailhead – not just having completed a route, but having built the skills and confidence to plan your next adventure.

Congratulations! You’re no longer backpacking-curious. You’re backcountry ready!

Private, Custom & Team Experiences

Blaze’s Backcountry Bootcamp is primarily designed for private, custom groups – friends, couples, families, and organizations who want a personalized introduction to backpacking. We tailor pacing, route selection, and instruction to your group’s experience level and goals to ensure a supportive, confidence-building first backcountry experience.

These trips also make a powerful corporate team-building experience. There’s something uniquely effective about shared challenge, problem-solving, and stepping outside comfort zones together. Teams leave not only with new skills, but with stronger communication, trust, and camaraderie built on the trail.

Women+ Group Experiences

If you’re interested in joining a scheduled group trip instead, we offer a condensed, one-night “learn to backpack” crash course in partnership with Girls Who Hike Virginia. These trips are women+ only and run twice per year in the spring and fall.

Creating accessible, supportive spaces for women+ in the outdoors is deeply important to us. These trips are intentionally designed to build skills, confidence, and community in an environment where women+ can learn, ask questions, and step into the backcountry feeling empowered.

You can view upcoming departures and availability on our WeTravel page.

However you join us – privately, with your company, or in community – you won’t just complete a trip. You’ll walk away capable, confident, and ready to carry your next adventure on your own back.
