The Lowdown

The Presidential Range stands as the crown jewel of New Hampshire’s White Mountains, home to some of the tallest and most rugged peaks in the Northeast. Named after U.S. presidents, these iconic summits deliver sweeping alpine views, dramatic ridgelines, and a sense of adventure that few hikes can match.

With our self-guided package, you can tackle the full Presidential Traverse on your own schedule. Choose between a Presidential Traverse hut-to-hut hiking trip, staying in the famous AMC huts for a lighter pack and a warm bed, or a Presidential Traverse backpacking trip, camping along the route for a true wilderness experience. Either way, you’ll link these legendary peaks in one of the most challenging and rewarding treks in the country—a bucket-list adventure filled with rugged terrain, changing weather, and unforgettable scenery.

What You’ll Love about the Presidential Traverse

What makes the Presidential Traverse so special is its rare stretch of continuous ridgeline hiking – an experience almost unheard of on the East Coast. Along the way, you can choose between two incredible styles of adventure: a Presidential Traverse hut-to-hut hiking trip, staying in the Appalachian Mountain Club’s iconic high-mountain huts, or a Presidential Traverse backpacking trip, camping at beautifully curated tentsites nestled high in the alpine zone or tucked into quiet forest clearings.

These backcountry outposts offer rustic charm, warm meals, and camaraderie at day’s end, with sunsets that spill across the peaks and stars that feel close enough to touch. You’ll love the balance of intensity and comfort, challenge and reward. You’ll climb, sweat, laugh, and rest well. And when it’s over, you’ll walk away with the kind of memories only a journey in the White Mountains can offer.

The Presidential Traverse Hike (abbreviated itinerary below, full itinerary included with purchase)

Day 1 of your Presidential Traverse hiking or backpacking trip begins with a steep 4-mile climb gaining 4,000 feet to the summit of Mount Madison. After taking in the alpine views, it’s a short descent to Madison Spring Hut, where you’ll spend the night surrounded by dramatic mountain scenery.

Day 2 is a rugged alpine trek over four Presidential peaks. You’ll climb Mount Adams, cross the rocky ridge to Mount Jefferson, and summit Mount Washington, the highest point in the Northeast. A final descent leads to Lake of the Clouds Hut, where you’ll rest with sweeping views after a challenging day above the trees.

Descending to Lake of the Clouds Hut

Day 3 begins with sunrise views from Lake of the Clouds Hut before continuing south over Mount Monroe and the remaining southern Presidential peaks. After crossing Mount Jackson and Mount Webster, the trail descends through waterfalls and forest to the AMC Highland Center, completing the full traverse.
